Allen was born in Clark Co., IN 2 Nov 1842. His father died four months before Mack's birth. Allen was the son of Allen McFletcher Coker Peeler and Amy Griswold. Allen died 11 Dec 1914 in Indiana, at 72 years of age. Burial in Conway Cemetery, Franklin Twp., Washington County. He conducted a livery stable in Scottsburg for many years. This old and well-maintained graveyard is located in Finley Township, Scott County, Indiana at the junction of Scott county Roads 225 S. and 500 W., about two miles northwest of Leota. It is in a 40-acre tract of land in Section 32, T. 3N, R.6 E, which was entered 7/6/1839 by William Bennett.

The Atlas of Scott County 1889, shows School No. 4 as being situated there, hence the cemetery is called either Bennett, School No. 4., or Hopewell. There is evidence of many unmarked graves. -(Copied from 1978 Cemetery Book.)

May 13, 1986 To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing you in regards to an ad in the Scott Co., Journal concerning old cemeteries in the county.

This old cemetery is in Finley Township on the Zion Road in the corner of the Zion Road where the Oak Hill Road goes west just North of where Hazel Shields lives.

It's the old Hopewell Cemetery as you go west on the Leota Road and turn right or North on the right or east of the road at the top of the first hill. It was a log structure and was founded by my Grandfather Hobbs and his family and the Finley family.

My grandfather, Framcis M. Hobbs, who originally came form Virginia at an early age (1815 - 1900). My father, George W. Hobbs, lived 1846 - 1940, and joined the old church at an early age.

My maternal grandparents were James and Margaret Aley at the bottoms of the Aley hill just north of the Church. The old grade school that stood north of the old cemetery was the Aley School District No. 4.

This cemetery has been referred to at different times in the Journal as the No. 4 Cemetery, The Zion Cemetery, and the Bennett Cemetery and nothing could be more wrong.

The old Hopewell Church finally burned and the present Zion Methodist Church was an off-shoot from the old Hopewell Church and it was founded by the Finley family and some of the old Yarrot families (Garriot?)

I am the youngest child of the late George and Elizabeth Aley Hobbs. This information was all handed down from them, so I know that it's all correct.

I was born in 1904 so all of this happened long before my time, and I am probably the only living person that has this information. I am the last of my family and the last of my generation.

Mrs. Elizabeth Weir, widow of Col. George Weir, died at her home in Jeffersonville, Ind. last week after a long illness of paralysis. Mrs. Weir was a native of Franklin township this county. She was about 65 years of age. With her husband she went to Jeffersonville about twenty years ago, and for many years thereafter conducted a hotel. Mrs. Weir is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James Baker and Mrs. Viola Cotrell and two sons, Otto and Clarence Weir.

12. Thomas Jefferson3 Hobbs (Jane, Weir, John W.°) was born in Indiana Nov 1850. He was probably born in either Scott County or Washington County. Thomas died 23 Jan 1936 in Scott Co., IN, at 85 years of age. He died near Leota. Burial in Hopewell Cemetery. Obituary in Scottsburg Chronicle, 29 Jan 1936. One of Finley Townships oldest residents (and an ardent Republican), Thomas was in the real estate business for many years. [See also obit, Hobbs-Weir, p. 6.]

He married Mary L. Wolfe in Washington Co., IN, 11 May 1871. Mary was born in Cameron, Monroe Co., OH 1 May 1855. Mary was the daughter of Henry Wolfe and Christina M. Erick. Mary died 1 Feb 1946 in Scott Co., IN, at 90 years of age. Burial in Hopewell Cemetery. Obituary in Scottsburg Chronicle, 7 Feb 1946. [See also obit, Hobbs-Weir, p. 7.]

Notes for George William Weir:

Family tradition has it that immigrant George Weir was born in County Antrim but that birthplace has never been verified. I have not found a marriage date, or place of marriage for George and Margaret (Gardner) Weir.

However, William "Pat" Morrison visited the Beech Grove Cemetery in early spring of 2003 and made a discovery that all the rest of us have seen every time we were looked at George Weir's stone and did not comprehend. This stone has weathered almost black although there are some spots of lighter color, it is a different type of stone than that of David and Jane Weir and has not crumbled and fallen into pieces, it reads" George Weir born July 15, 1788 died Dec 31, 1845 - Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." This read we stop reading, overlooking the important message about two or three inches from the bottom of the stone that reads "B. Sevier, Co. Ky."

There is a Sevier, Union County, Kentucky, in our current maps of Kentucky - BUT, Union County was not formed until the early 1800's. Iooking for the formation of Kentucky - found that in 1777 Fincastle Co., Virginia was divided into three counties - those being Washington, Montgomery and Kentucky Counties. In 1780 Kentucky County was divided into three counties - Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln. Soon six more counties were formed. Further search found that what we know now as the state of Kentucky was not formed until four years after the birth of George Weir. Also a Sevier County now in Tennessee, was included in that area first called Kentucky County, Virginia. Checking back in my accumulated Weir papers found many Weirs / Wears in the area of Sevier County and Sevierville, Tennessee. A James Weir has not been found that would fit our family at this point. - This is substantuated by the fact that searching for an application for American Citizenship for George and John Weir has been futile - Since being born on Ameirican soil does not necessitate naturalization - they were Americans with their first breath .

Family interpretation: James Gardner Weir, b. 1814, and George William Weir b. 1819, their father : George Weir b. 1788, age 32. 1. Margaret Jane or Peggy Weir b. 1811, 2. Mary Matilda Weir b. 1816, and their mother, Margaret (Gardner) Weir b. 1788 age 32

 

George Weir applied for land in Washington County, Indiana, for which a patent was granted on 12 July 1828. As was explained for brother David at that point in time the land was paid for at the time of purchase but the grant was often not issued until years later.

A few years later a George W. Weir filed for land in Washington County - Seven years later a George W. filed for land in Scott County. I feel that the first applicant was George Weir b. 1788 - that George W., who was his first son, and married to Mary Jane McCullough - first lived in Washington Co., then Scott Co., and moved to and died in Hancock Co., Illinois. Census records for George W. will appear in third generation. I feel that previous researchers felt that George and George W. were the same person and used the middle name, William, for both.

Please Note - The authority date is not the date the land was purchased. It had to be paid for in cash at time of purchase. Because of the great number of patents to be issued it was several years before the patent would be received by the landowner. Earlier attempts to schedule payment over a four year period resulted in havoc. 1816 was the coldest summer on record many people could not make their payments because their crops failed, and lost their land as a result. From about 1818 - buying government land was pretty much a cash on the barrel head proposition. In about 1865 purchase of government land procedure changed again with the first of various homestead grants.

There is some conflict regarding the middle name of the first son in the above list. Some researchers use John Joe, some, John Josiah, Some, John Joseph. His descendants living in Martinsville, Clark , Illinois use John Joseph.

CITIZENSHIP: An application for American Citizenship for a David Weir was found in the Fairfield District (previous to Counties) of South Carolina Archives, Court of Common Pleas, Citizenship papers Box 1 that is thought to be for our David Weir. Fairfield District is adjacent to Chester County South Carolina. where we find Weir Family groups who came to the United States with the Rev. Martin in about 1790.

The Citizenship papers are. as the others we have found, handwritten, using different callegraphy and vocabulary than we use in 2008.

Washington County, Indiana, David is listed as David WEAR having three daughters under 10

years of age. The family Bible records Margaret Susannah as born Oct 1812, Jane Gray Weir

as being born in March 1817 and Mary Weir as being born October 5, 1819. In the Obituary for

Jane Gray Weir it states that Jane was born in South Carolina. In the 1850 census for

Washington Co., Indiana it states that Mary was born in Indiana, so we must conclude that the

Family arrived in Indiana between May 1817 and October of 1819.

Washington County, Indiana, David is listed as David WEAR having three daughters under 10

years of age. The family Bible records Margaret Susannah as born Oct 1812, Jane Gray Weir

as being born in March 1817 and Mary Weir as being born October 5, 1819. In the Obituary for

Jane Gray Weir it states that Jane was born in South Carolina. In the 1850 census for

Washington Co., Indiana it states that Mary was born in Indiana, so we must conclude that the

Family arrived in Indiana between May 1817 and October of 1819.

We do not have a date that David filed for land at the Jeffersonfille, Indiana Land Office and it was

common not to receive the title for land for several years.David may have filed in 1819 when he arrived in Indiana or

he may have lived on the land as a "Squatter" until crops had provided money for the cash payment. The Patent was issued January 9, 1841 for 40 acres of land in Section 14, Township 2-N Range 5E, 2nd prime meridian, Franklin Township, Washington Co., Indiana.

Family tradition has it that immigrant George Weir was born in County Antrim but that birthplace has never been verified. I have not found a marriage date, or place of marriage for George and Margaret (Gardner) Weir.

However, William "Pat" Morrison visited the Beech Grove Cemetery in early spring of 2003 and made a discovery that all the rest of us have seen every time we were looked at George Weir's stone and did not comprehend. This stone has weathered almost black although there are some spots of lighter color, it is a different type of stone than that of David and Jane Weir and has not crumbled and fallen into pieces, it reads" George Weir born July 15, 1788 died Dec 31, 1845 - Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." This read we stop reading, overlooking the important message about two or three inches from the bottom of the stone that reads "B. Sevier, Co. Ky."

There is a Sevier, Union County, Kentucky, in our current maps of Kentucky - BUT, Union County was not formed until the early 1800's. Iooking for the formation of Kentucky - found that in 1777 Fincastle Co., Virginia was divided into three counties - those being Washington, Montgomery and Kentucky Counties. In 1780 Kentucky County was divided into three counties - Jefferson, Fayette, and Lincoln. Soon six more counties were formed. Further search found that what we know now as the state of Kentucky was not formed until four years after the birth of George Weir. Also a Sevier County now in Tennessee, was included in that area first called Kentucky County, Virginia. Checking back in my accumulated Weir papers found many Weirs / Wears in the area of Sevier County and Sevierville, Tennessee. A James Weir has not been found that would fit our family at this point. - This is substantuated by the fact that searching for an application for American Citizenship for George and John Weir has been futile - Since being born on Ameirican soil does not necessitate naturalization - they were Americans with their first breath .

Family interpretation: James Gardner Weir, b. 1814, and George William Weir b. 1819, their father : George Weir b. 1788, age 32. 1. Margaret Jane or Peggy Weir b. 1811, 2. Mary Matilda Weir b. 1816, and their mother, Margaret (Gardner) Weir b. 1788 age 32

 

George Weir applied for land in Washington County, Indiana, for which a patent was granted on 12 July 1828. As was explained for brother David at that point in time the land was paid for at the time of purchase but the grant was often not issued until years later.

A few years later a George W. Weir filed for land in Washington County - Seven years later a George W. filed for land in Scott County. I feel that the first applicant was George Weir b. 1788 - that George W., who was his first son, and married to Mary Jane McCullough - first lived in Washington Co., then Scott Co., and moved to and died in Hancock Co., Illinois. Census records for George W. will appear in third generation. I feel that previous researchers felt that George and George W. were the same person and used the middle name, William, for both.

Please Note - The authority date is not the date the land was purchased. It had to be paid for in cash at time of purchase. Because of the great number of patents to be issued it was several years before the patent would be received by the landowner. Earlier attempts to schedule payment over a four year period resulted in havoc. 1816 was the coldest summer on record many people could not make their payments because their crops failed, and lost their land as a result. From about 1818 - buying government land was pretty much a cash on the barrel head proposition. In about 1865 purchase of government land procedure changed again with the first of various homestead grants.

There is some conflict regarding the middle name of the first son in the above list. Some researchers use John Joe, some, John Josiah, Some, John Joseph. His descendants living in Martinsville, Clark , Illinois use John Joseph.

Amelia and John had made their home in Washington County somewhere near Amelia’s childhood home. Amelia and John had four children before she died June 24, 1846, most likely in childbirth with her fourth child Alvan who also died in June 1846.

# Note:

Wendell, born in Reading, Massachusetts, December 27, 1799, went West September 1818, is a retired octogenarian, but for a long period served the community in filling many public offices of important trust. Among them he was collector of public revenue in 1839, Coroner from 1840 to 1842; the next two years High Sheriff -- all in Jackson County, Indiana. In 1854, he removed to Ringgold County, Iowa, where he was Postmaster of Redding and was elected School Fund Commissioner in 1855, and served in that office about three years. In 1862 was appointed to fill the place of Judge Keller when he went into the army; and at the next annual election was chose for a full term, the office being for county business and for Probating estates of deceased persons; and while acting as Judge, the Legislature passed a law making the county Judge eligibe to the office of county Recorder, and he was elected to that office and acted some three years; then he retired from public life -- though his fellow citizens continued to urge him to take offices -- and has since resided on his farm near Mormontown, which place of residence is in the westerly part of Ringgold County, Iowa, and within about one mile of the boundary line between Ringgold and Taylor Counties.

At the time his children were born he resided on White River in the westerly part of Jackson County, IN, and about ten miles west of Brownstown, the county seat of Jackson County. After coming to Ringgold County, he owned 410 acres of land which he bought of government, and resided some eight miles west of Mount Ayr, the seat of that county; but it was more land than he could easily manage after his boys left, so he gave portions of it to some of them and sold the rest and bought about 1865, the place near Mormontown, where he resides in 1880.

They had one son, Eli Zaring, who died of yellow fever about 1850 at age 22 in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. He was unmarried. Alvan and Julia Ann’s Nine Children: Lydia Amanda, John Marshall, Isabella, Alvan Mansfield, Anna Maria, Daniel Webster, Clinton Ellsworth, Susan Emma and Wesley Ames.
